Do you love 80s action flicks? Then "Commando" is likely a film close to your heart. As a blend of deadpan humour, outlandish plot, and the type of invincible action that Arnie does best, it's hard not to enjoy this fast-paced comic thriller. Now on DVD, here's the perfect opportunity to relive a classic - or is it?
It's hard to get excited about the picture quality. It's only marginally better than VHS, and some scenes look a little grainy and washed out. It is in widescreen so it's an improvement, but it could be better.
The 2.0 surround mix is a thundering delight though. James Horner's busy 80s thumping kettle-drum-laced confection belts out from the front, while in the surround speakers mayhem breaks out at every opportunity. It's good, then, but this is the type of movie that begs for the ultimate 5.1 sub woofer showdown with your neighbours. The explosions ultimately lack bass with the 2.0 mix, and there's always the nagging feeling that it could have been that touch crazier.
How about a trailer for an extra feature? That's all you get. A group commentary could have been good, but unlikely though as this is an early Arnie flick and everyone has moved on. Apart from some early 90s exceptions, Schwarzenegger has rarely been so entertaining. No really!
