Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves DVD (1991)

Despite the muddled nature of this film, it was a smash hit and indeed it has some enjoyable moments, many of them fuelled by Alan Rickman's demented performance. So, it's quite incredible that Warner Brother's should choose to release such a lacklustre DVD of this film.

Good prints of this film seem to be in short supply, with the UK TV version being memorably poor. There are a few scratches in the one used for DVD too, and it's hardly helped by being a non-anamorphic transfer. Even relatively bright daylight scenes look murky with grain, and it's clear that little effort has been put into making this film look good. It's better than VHS editions but then that's the least you'd expect.

There is no 5.1 mix to sweeten the deal, although the 2.0 surround track on this disc is actually very good. Plenty of effects, especially during action scenes, create a busy sound stage, and Kamen's music score has plenty of depth to it.

Now, we might love to get a director's commentary that might shed some light onto the famous problems that beset the film, but it was never likely to happen now, was it? Surely though, Warner's could have slung a trailer onto this DVD. There's nothing here. Not even a music video of Bryan Adam's 'Everything I Do (I Do It For You)' song, (though some might be grateful for that!) All said, it's a passable disc, but what a bore.
