The Terminator DVD (1984)

It's ironic that, in a documentary on the DVD release of "The Terminator", the cast and crew recall how the production studio saw the film as a B-movie that would disappear without trace. They would all have been in for a shock had they seen then the work that has gone now into producing this incredible two-disc set.

The low lighting and the red saturation when the movie switches to Arnie's perspective played merry hell with older video releases. It's great, then, on the DVD to see the film looking sharp, detailed, and very fresh with none of the horrible colour bleeds and smears that used to ruin it on tape.

An all-new killer of a 5.1 track beefs up the action with a lot of work going into the rear speakers, especially in the hellish visions of the future.

For those of you interested in honing your screenwriting skills, take a look at the three different drafts of the James Cameron script that you'll find on disc one's DVD-ROM features. If you don't have a DVD-ROM drive, there are 12 scenes from his 1982 original treatment on disc two for you to browse on your TV.

As you'll see from the mighty list below, the second disc comes with a lot of added features. Two documentaries, one from 1992 and one from 2000 add up to 80 minutes of interviews, behind-the-scenes footage, and anecdotes from the cast and crew. Along with the galleries of production stills, conceptual artwork, deleted scenes, and more, there's little a fan couldn't ask for here.
