The highly entertaining fantasy romp "Highlander" finally makes it onto a DVD that offers more than it may care to tell you.
Director Russell Mulcahy hit a career high here in terms of visual flair, and this was always lost in the pan and scan video releases. It's great to see the film in widescreen again and especially in such a fresh transfer.
The all-new 5.1 mix is a pleasingly busy affair, with the Queen soundtrack reaching into the sub woofer and wrenching out considerable bass effects.
The few Warner Brothers/Studio Canal discs that have been released to date have been rather miserable affairs, with the "Kind Hearts and Coronets" DVD proving to be very disappointing. Bizarrely, now that they have a good DVD to boast about, they choose not to. The cover mentions nothing of the Christopher Lambert interview and does little to sell the image galleries.
While someone in Studio Canal marketing gets a well-deserved slap, here's a brief overview of the treats in store. A new eight-minute interview with Christopher Lambert proves to be an enlightening affair as he commends Mulcahy's direction as "visually ahead of its time." He also reveals that the extras in the Scottish battle scenes "couldn't see as they were so drunk."
Three image galleries split into interesting examples of the conceptual poster designs that didn't get used, the final designs that were used, and shots from the movie itself. A funky animated menu system wraps this tidy little bundle up into a cool DVD that, for the near budget price, is well worth buying.
