Mulholland Falls DVD (1996)

"Mulholland Falls" is a period thriller that is distinguished by an excellent cast, even if most of them seem to be outdoing each other in deep gravel voices. This, of course, excludes Melanie Griffith and Jennifer Connelly, both of whom look superb on a pleasing DVD release.

The quality veneer of this crime drama shines on disc. The rich and warm tones of the 1950s settings look good in a transfer that is often quite sharp. Darker scenes are a little softer but there's little to distract you from the film.

The 2.0 stereo mix doesn't offer much in the way of effects, but is nevertheless clear and suitably moody when needed.

Disc extras are somewhat limited. You get the trailer plus a small photo gallery that you're unlikely to look at more than once. Two pages of production notes are available in the 'Feature Filmography' although just as they get interesting, they finish! It's a shame but this is still a DVD worth getting, especially if you enjoy a little quality hoodlum movie fun.
