Dick DVD (1999)

Despite a cover that makes it look more like a silly comedy, "Dick" is a pretty classy affair. And the superior production values and attention to detail are all up on the screen and looking great on this DVD.

The slightly ridiculous but fun premise sees high school friends Kirsten Dunst and Michelle Williams go on a field trip to the White House. There they come across some secrets they shouldn't have, and in an effort to keep them quiet, they're offered the post of official dog walkers for President Richard "Tricky Dicky" Nixon's mutt.

The crazy plot, along with some fine performances, allows broad humour to blend nicely with witty satire in this pleasantly humorous movie.

Set in the 70s, it's filled with great art direction that wraps the cast in a world of lurid colourful fluff. All the striking tones look superb in a fine anamorphic transfer.

The sound score is dominated with a heady selection of 70s hits that work well in the 5.1 mix.

The disc comes with plenty of extras but they don't shed a lot of light on the production of the film. The commentary by director Andrew Fleming and co-writer Sheryl Longin is poorly prepared and often plain dull. The blooper reel is a little more fun although it's padded out with outtakes that aren't exactly hysterical.

If you're looking for a comedy that's a little different then you'll certainly do well to rent this film on disc because for sound and picture quality, there's little faulting this DVD.
