Summer holiday fun 2009!

The summer holidays are upon us again, and if you're stuck for ideas to keep the kids amused come rain or shine, look no further than our guide to summer holiday fun!

Summer holiday events 2009

Throughout the holidays...

Peterborough Museum - 'Dinosaur! The Age Of The Dinosaurs' is the museum's main attraction this summer.  Get up close to prehistoric creatures via some great hands-on exhibits, and watch out for monsters lurking around every corner. There will also be a craft workshop between 10.30am and 12.30pm each weekday and a range of themed trails taking place around the building at a cost of 50p per child. The museum is open from 10am to 5pm Monday to Saturday, and from 12 noon to 4pm on Sundays and Bank Holiday Monday. Call 01733 864663 for details.

Peterborough Museum - 'Historic Peterborough for Children' tours are held each Tuesday at 2pm throughout the school holidays. Tickets cost £3 per person (adults or children) and under-fives can take part for free.

Peterborough Museum - Peterborough Ghost Walk runs every Tuesday evening throughout the holidays at 7.30pm. This costs £5 for adults and £3 concessions, with no need to book!

Peterborough - Free sports and activity sessions: Bowling, dance, netball and football are among the free sports sessions being offered by Peterborough City Council and Asda this summer. Sessions are for children aged eight to 13-years and they will need a voucher to take part - available from Asda at Rivergate, Peterborough, or from www.asda-sportingchance.co.uk.

Anglesey Abbey, Gardens and Lode Mill - Thrilling Thursdays: Every Thursday from 6th to 27th August head to Anglesey for a range of different activity days - from grinding your own wheat at the mill to jam-making workshops and much more. Prices range from £2-5, to book call 01223 810080.

Wicken Fen - Wild Child Trail: Get your Wild Child pack from the reception and follow the Wild Child Trail. Trail pack £1. Normal admission applies.

Pond dipping with the National Trust

Wicken Fen - Pond Dipping for All every Tuesday 12.30pm - 3.30pm. Sign up for a 30 minute session of underwater discovery. Ticket £1.50, normal admission applies.

Welney Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust - Take a self-led trail out on the reserve to learn about the summer residents and try dipping a net in the wildlife packed ponds at the pond-dipping station. Arts and crafts everyday in the pond room to create your own wildlife treasures! Normal admission applies.

Kettle's Yard - House of Chalk: Every weekday afternoon from 2-4pm the education room will have a gigantic blackboard wall for you to sketch, chat, doodle and dazzle. Min Jeong Park will be on hand each weekday afternoon in August to offer ideas, talk about the artworks and support the use of some messier materials! Free, no need to book.

Botanic Garden Cambridge - Great Plant Hunt: Every Thursday throughout August (6th, 13th, 20th and 27th) budding naturalists will be able to try out Darwin's approach by exploring the Systematic Beds on a 'Thinking Walk'. Participants can also try their hand at making a Darwin Doodle Book or borrowing a Young Explorer Backpack, a kit that includes binoculars, bug viewers and a Spot-a-Lot activity trail devised to inspire children to collect and record information about the world about them. Cost is £2 per child plus normal admission charges for accompanying adults. No need to book, just turn up between 11am - 3pm.

Monday 3rd to Wednesday 19th August (Mondays and Wednesdays), and Thursday 13th August

Saxon Youth Club - School holiday fun: Young people aged 13-19 will be able to produce their own music, compete in sports activities or try their hand at cooking at Saxon Youth Club, Saxon Community Centre, Norman Road, Peterborough every Monday and Wednesday from 3pm. PLUS - an aeroball (basketball and trampolining) tournament will take place on Thursday 13th August between 3.30pm and 6.30pm.

Monday 3rd August and Friday 21st August

Wicken Fen - Fen Pirates Go Wild: Swashbuckling craft, use the treasure map to find a hidden fortune, and dip for 'sea monsters'! For 4-12 year-olds. 10.30am - 12.30pm or 2pm - 4pm. £4.50 per child. Booking essential on 01353 720274.

Wednesday 5th August

Wimpole Estate - Bale Maze at Home Farm, can you reach the centre of the giant bale maze? 10.30am - 5pm.

Thursday 6th August

Farmland Museum and Denny Abbey - Kite making: Let's go fly a kite... try your hand at making a kite either for decoration or to fly up to its highest height! No need to book, just turn up between 12pm and 4pm. Suitable for children aged four and above, each child should be accompanied by an adult and all activities are included in the normal admission price.

Friday 7th August

Wicken Fen - Wildlife Detectives: Learn how to read the clues to see what is living in your garden. Dissect owl pellets and identify poo! For 6-12 year-olds. 10.30am - 12.30pm, or 2pm - 4pm. £4.50 per child. Booking essential on 01353 720274.

Sunday 9th August

Welney Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust - Bug Buddies: Let the kids become bug buddies for the day to explore the habitats of the Ouse washes at Welney for lots of bugs and beasties! 10am - 4pm, normal admission applies.

Wednesday 12th August

Wicken Fen - Teddy Bears' Picnic: Bring along your favourite teddy, for stories, craft and furry fun! For 2-8 year-olds. 10.30am - 12.30pm, or 2pm - 4pm. £4.50 per child. Booking essential on 01353 720274.

Wednesday 12th and Wednesday 26th August

Wysing Arts - Kinetic Junk Sculpture Workshop: Come and design your own sculpture from recycled materials and make it move using solar energy. Suitable for ages 7 to 13 years. 1-4pm, free admission.

Thursday 13th August

Farmland Museum and Denny Abbey - Cow Day: Celebrating all things that moo! Come and paint our cows, create a fuzzy felt cow badge, see butter and cheese being made in the old dairy. No need to book, just turn up between 12pm and 4pm. Suitable for children aged four and above, each child should be accompanied by an adult and all activities are included in the normal admission price.

Monday 17th August

Wicken Fen - Fairies, Pixies and Potions! Discover the magical secrets of wildlife and flowers. Make your magic potions to take home. For 4-10 year-olds. 10.30am - 12.30pm, or 2 - 4pm. £4.50 per child. Booking essential on 01353 720274.

Thursday 20th August

Farmland Museum and Denny Abbey - Farmland Games: From wellie wanging to pretend ploughing matches, come and join the Farmland Team. Collect your sporting stickers and create a colourful rosette that is fit for a winner! No need to book, just turn up between 12pm and 4pm. Suitable for children aged four and above, each child should be accompanied by an adult and all activities are included in the normal admission price.

Wednesday 26th August

Wicken Fen - Wild Art: Take inspiration from the natural world to create masterpieces. For children aged 3-12 years. 10.30am - 12.30pm. £4.50 per child. Booking essential on 01353 720274.

Thursday 27th August

Farmland Museum and Denny Abbey - Painting On Grass: Come and add some colour to the grassy summery shapes. Wear old clothes and prepare to get messy! No need to book, just turn up between 12pm and 4pm. Suitable for children aged four and above, each child should be accompanied by an adult and all activities are included in the normal admission price.

Monday 31st August

Houghton Mill - Alice through the Looking Glass: A new production of the family favourite. Bring rugs or chairs to sit on and a picnic if you wish to eat during the play. Booking advisable on 0845 4505157. Gates open 5.30pm, performance 6.30pm - 8.30pm. Tea room will be open until end of interval. Adult £10, Child £7, Family £30.

Wimpole Hall - Bank Holiday Fun: Children's entertainer at Home Farm plus meet the 'Trip Back in Time' characters across the estate. 11am-4pm, normal farm admission.
