Out and about

The Heart of the World Festival is a 10-day celebration of all things musical, arty and cultural, with events taking place right across Cambridge.

Thursday 1st May to Sunday 11th May, various venues

Highlights include a performance by blues and jazz vocalist, Jose James, who opens the festival at the Junction on 1st May, Tibetan Monks, and the Mugenyo Taiko Drummers. There are plenty of free events and demonstrations, plus a special family day on Sunday 11th May at the Cambridge Guildhall.

West African performance workshop

Tibetan monks performing

Tibetan Monks - the sacred sounds of Tibet

Complete with chanting of mantras, bells, cymbals, drums and the sound of the long horns.Tibetan monks from the Tashi Lhunpo Monastery present sacred dances, music and prayers, with traditional costumes and ceremonial masks. Corn Exchange, Wednesday 7th May, 7.30pm. Booking on 01223 357 851.

African and Salsa dance class and performance

Kanda Bongo Man's music gave birth to the kwassa kwassa dance rhythm where the hips move back and forth while the hands move to follow the hips... still with me? If not, join in the dance class before the performance at the Junction on Friday 9th May. Booking on 01223 511511.

Heart of the World Family Day - and it's FREE!

Music, dancing, workshops, competitions and activities for all the family. Try your hand at the art of Chinese Paper Cutting or Origami. There'll be Flamenco dancing, African Salsa and African and Cuban drumming sessions. Also competitions and quizzes with prizes as well as a chance to make your own instrument. Sunday 11th May, 12 noon to 4pm at the Cambridge Guildhall (FREE).
