Wysing Welaunch

Could we have a drum roll please? T-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t-ching. Why thank you very much (it's difficult writing down the sound of a drum roll). The Wysing Arts Centre is primed for a relaunch and we have all the details right here.

Wysing relaunch, Saturday 19th January, 2007

£1.7m over 17 months is the kind of spending that gets your attention and as the excitement over the relaunch of the Wysing Arts Centre almost comes to a climax, there looks like there might be a few attention grabbing spectacles afoot.

While many of us will be nursing New Year's hangovers or hitting the gym to uphold that ill-informed resolution we took up, the good folk at Wysing will be filling their brand new shiny corridors with thought provoking, cutting edge contemporary art.

"WAC is a magical place to visit, but the relaunch event will show it off to its best. Beautifully lit, with an art band playing throughout."

Donna Lynas, Director, Wysing Arts Centre

Christmas has come a little late in Wysing but many of the facilities on their wish-list will be unwrapped come the middle of January. They include studio spaces for up to nine artists, a 'new-media' suite and reception area and café.

The centre already houses 15 artists and the extra space now takes the tally to 24 - all working and exhibiting their projects at Wysing and spanning a rainbow of nationalities including the USA, Norway, Peru, Japan and Puerto Rico.

The new setup encourages artists to dabble with experimentation and there is sure to be creations for all tastes as exhibitions include painting, sculpture, ceramics, installation, photography, animation, video and performance.

Golden Train by Mark Dixon and Flowers by Michael Brennan-Wood are among the new art on display while Oliver Hein's stunning Blue Cube greets visitors before they even enter the glitzy new buildings.

So when can we get a look at all the lovely newness? Well, the weekend of Saturday 19th January is a Special Open Weekend when visitors are invited to see the new buildings and even meet the artists who have filled the emptiness with exciting new stuff.

The gallery will continue to be open every day from 12 - 6pm until the exhibition finishes on Sunday 24th February. Entry is free.

The Wysing Arts Centre is in Bourn just outside Cambridge on Fox Road. Check the website for more details.
