Do One Thing for nature in Peterborough on Sunday 10th June!

The Springwatch Festival is taking place in Central Park in Peterborough from 10am until 4pm on Sunday 10th June to inspire us all to do more to make space for wildlife.

Central Park, Peterborough

And there are all sorts of things you can do to help the county's birds, bees, bats and beetles!  It might involve transforming an area of land into a wildlife haven, but it could equally be something simple like baking a fat-cake for our feathered friends or leaving a patch of your garden un-mown to allow wild flowers to flourish.

A range of wildlife groups are planning a series of events throughout the festival to help you get involved. Activities will include an inspirational area, a hands-on area, tips on how to make space for wildlife and loads of family entertainment.

Do One Thing...

The festival is being organised by Peterborough City Council in collaboration with the BBC, so there'll be a special BBC Springwatch area where you can come and pledge to ‘Do One Thing’ for nature.

Live broadcasts plus CBeebies!

Younger visitors will love the nature trail inspired by characters like PC Plum from CBeebies. BBC Radio Cambridgeshire's Matt Jamison and Sue Dougan will also be broadcasting live from the event and visitors will be able to put their gardening questions to our panel of experts.

Bill Oddie

Oddly like Bill?

Oddly like Bill?

Of course, we all know and love the face of BBC Springwatch, the unique, ever-jolly Bill Oddie. But is Mr Oddie really so unique? We're on the hunt for Bill Oddie look-alikes for our Oddly like Bill photo gallery.

If you think you look like Bill, or your kids do, or even your dog bears a striking resemblance to Mr Oddie, then email your photographs to us and we'll add them to our gallery...

Peterborough - an official Breathing Place City

Peterborough City Council has successfully bid to become one of 15 BBC Breathing Place Cities. Local authorities from around the UK were asked to submit proposals to host a Springwatch launch event in June followed by a year of smaller activities designed to help people think about ways in which they could work to improve the environment in which they live.

Help make Peterborough the UK's Environment Capital

Peterborough is already one of four Environment Cities and is bidding to become the UK's Environment Capital. This means that the city would be acknowledged internationally as a model of how to deliver substantial and sustainable growth to improve the environment and the quality of life for its people and communities.

Green Festival

The BBC Breathing Places initiative is just one of a number of environment-inspired project planned in Peterborough throughout the coming year. A two-week long Green Festival gets underway on 26th May and will culminate in the Springwatch Festival on 10th June.

You can find out more about Peterborough's Green Festival from Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT) by using the link on the right of this page.

What a great time we had on Sunday! Agree that B Oddie needs to be knighted, he's opening nature up to an urban street view.

John Walsh
As a parent, and keen springwatcher, the event in Peterborough was excellent, well done to all who set it up and the public for making it so.

Bernie Gold
There were no directions on the websites to central park.Bernie

Linda
Wonderful parking arrangements!!!!!!!!!!

Every effort should be put into making sure Peterborough becomes the Environmental Capital. Enough talking - more action!Relatively little has happened in this City during my 20 years here compared with other similar areas.Initially, this is a negative, but can be turned into a massive positive because of the potential and the need to update, develop and modernise. Advantage can be made of the latest materials when developing eco friendly housing for example. We also have a nucleus of Environmental organisations in the City. The Southbank development could be a huge attraction. The opportunity and potential is massive at this City central riverside site, but there is a need for high quality and thoughful development. Hopefully, the legacies of our recent history will, eventually, be bulldozed.Further development of Peterboroughs' cycleway network would encourage even more people onto their bike for leisure and a healthy alternative of getting into work.Peterborough is extremely flat - another negative? Lets turn this into a positive by also making Peterborough into the cycling Capital, attracting more people into a City and area with the most untapped potential in England.

I think Springwatch is amazing. It has really taught me alot and made me look around searching for different animals and insects on my patch.

Dean of Woodston
Central Park is directly opposite the College front gates (don't get it mixed up with the night club!). Let's show the nation what a great area for wildlife and environment Peterborough is.

Trevor Robinson
I agree with Tony, to be designated an official breathing place sounds excellent. Are Great Crested Newts a protected Species? I love Bill Oddy. He deserves to be knighted!

Elsie, at home, Turves
I unfortunately can't get to Central Park in Peterborough as I have no lift, will there be any coverage on local news or videos on the website?

Frank of Spalding
As a resident of Spalding, we would like to know where Central Park is in Peterborough and how to get there and where to park? The website is not very informative.
Editor: No probs. Just click the Peterborough Council link ont he right of the page, and then the Central Park link at the top of the article.

There are deer that live in a now very small wooded area close to where i live. As the housing developments and retail parks continue to be built (hampton area), this wild area will surely soon be gone. The same way the great crested newts of the area had to go, to make way for another Tescos, with all the concrete and tarmac that goes with it. ok, so perhaps next time its not tescos, but i bet it involves lots of concrete and tarmac :(

Phil Wright
SPRINGWATCH IS JUST GREAT! The genuine enthusiaism from Bill Kate and Simon is certainly infectious and we always learn something amazing..

Tony Harrison
I'm looking forward to living in an official breathing place!

We have lots of wild birds in our garden and we have umpteen feeders. We put two need feeders at the front of our home recently and have found two visitors who come round a couple of times each day to eat what the birds have knocked out of the feeders - two large white chickens from next door. We have named them Huck and Cluck and they are becoming quite regular visitors. They haven't graced us with any eggs - as yet. Another animal which visits the back gardenmost evenings to snack on the bird food on the ground is a hedgehog. We love Springwatch and may try and get along to the festival this weekend in Peterborough.I loved the story about the pond creatures. We have recently introduced newts to our large pond, to live alongsid the many frogs we already have plus the resident fish who continue to breed each year, so we shall have to wait and see what happens there and who eats who first.

Why are there no parks in the Fletton area? Building work is going on everywhere and green spaces are disappearing fast. Fletton and Hampton are soon to be one with no parks.

Molly aged 6.
My Nanna, and her neighbours garden, is regularly visited by a Hedgehog or maybe more, as they put out bowls of banana mixed with catfood in the evening and we have seen him or her come and eat the mix, and in the morning the plate has been licked clean. There may be some kittens (babies) also, but we will let you know if we see them. Also Nanna has seen a Woodpecker on the tree at the front of her house. I think these things are brilliant, I love nature and springwatch. Lastly, surprisingly I saw a Hedgehog at my allotment on Sunday in the daylight, it made a loud screeching noise and disappeared into a patch of Globe Artichokes!! xxxxxxxxxxx

Ahmed Bhimani
i'm looking forward to seeing Bill Oddy

If the city council wants to become environment capital, why are they proposing to spend £30 million on building a waste incinerator ??

Leanne
Hi Springwatch crew, I'd like to tell you how much I love the baby blackbirds that you are filming.

sophie Biggadike
I just love watching Springwatch because i love animals.

Iain Lowrie
Having watched Springwatch many times I find it annoying when, as in last nights programme with the hares, the item is spread throughout the programme instead of in one go.

Elouise Brazier
this is a wicked idea springwatch trackers

Paul R. Davis-Guyhirn Community Pond Action Group
Hi team - this message particularly relating to creating 'Breathing Places', as we (as in the Community of Guyhirn) are taking action on various projects under the 'main group' Heading of Guyhirn Development Community Trust which the Pond Group (GCPAG) is part. The pond at present is in a sorry state, although with an abundance of duck weed there is some life as in nesting Moorhens, with young. Our group is at present investigating how best to rejuvenate it to increase the variety of wildlife and maybe if possible (if it can happen in harmony) to re-create the pond at least in part, as a Sustainable focal point and learning resource, for the village community and local youth e.g. schools. To this end, although I have working experience in variety of Sustainable Environmental topics (incl. water analysis we would benefit from further specific advice and ideas on funding.Subject to Other Members' agreement, I would like to invite either Bill Oddie or Kate Humble to take a look at our pond and see if they can come up with further suggestions with the help of the BBC research crew, maybe David Bellamy would like to get join them. Anyway I would appreciate your help and look forward to an encouraging response. I am considering attending the Peterborough festival (depending on other committments) to see what can been acheived.I look forward in the hope to hearing from you soon (especially as we are at such an early stage, with the opportunity to follow the project through to hopefully its Community Aspired Conclusion), many thanks.RegardsPaul R. At the moment I am involved with a local group of residences in Ely that are very concerned with regards to construction and very aggressive husbandry at Roswell pits. We have just started being heard by the local press and I believe today we were on local radio, although I have not spoke to the member involved with regards to which local radio station, it may well be yourselves.Would you like to come and have a look for yourselves as I am afraid it will be a very gloomy spring watch for the locals around Roswell pits as we watch more and more trees being removed (one with a nest in). Could you help?
