Three for the weekend

by Chris Osborne
A bumper bank holiday weekend of trucks, cheese, and old school funfairs. So if you're stuck for something to do, here's the chance to fill your boots.

Truckfest, East of England Showground

It's every boy's dream isn't it really? Commandeering a giant, CO2 pumping, diesel fuelled, mechanical beast and destroying all pathetic 1992 Ford Escorts and Vauxhall Corsas that lie in your destructive path.

I lived out that very dream once. On the M42. I was picking bits of Fiat Punto out of my back tyres for weeks.

The really big Trucking Festival at the East of England Showgorund is for the big vehicle enthused trucker. There will be the enigmatic powerhouses like you see tearing down desert tract in American movies that go "wahhh-wahhh" when they plough through mountainside tunnels.

Jordan will be there too, who obviously isn't a truck but has numerous talents which derive from her particular genre of entertainment.

Dick and Dom (In da Bungalow), Bob the Builder (in da costume), and Jim Bowen (in da black out of da red) will also be in attendance, so all of the family should be entertained.

Truck and Driver Truckfest: Sunday 6th and Monday 7th May 2007 at the East of England Showground, Peterborough. Prices are £15 per day on the gate for adults, £7.50 for seniors and children, or you can pick up a fmaily ticket (2 + 2) for £37.50. Call 0870 121 1223 for more info.

Stilton Cheese Rolling, Stilton

We take our cheeses very seriously in Britain, and in turn we obviously take our cheese rolling very seriously. The village of Stilton would act as a stop off point for London based travellers heading up north back in the day. They would buy their Melton Mowbray cheese from the village, which in turn was coined Stilton cheese.

It is also rumoured that many of the village buildings were covertly - and ironically - built out of edam cheese by nefarious Dutchmen during the infamous cheese wars of 1823.

Monday's Stilton Cheese Rolling Festival will be opened by Warwick Davis (the fella who played Wicket the Ewok in Star Wars) and will see teams of four competing to be the fastest cheese rollers in the east. The prize? A ruddy big wheel of Stilton of course, get in!

Cheese-Rolling 2007, Stilton High Street, the fun starts at 10am. It's free to wander around all day, and £5 to enter the concert at 5pm at the Talbot.

Midsummer Common May Day Funfair

In the days of wireless internet, digital television, and left handed corkscrews it's always refreshing to see a pocket of our lives diligently protected from outside influence.

At the funfair

The age old funfair is one such pocket: the waltzers are still pushed by men with supernatural balancing powers, the candy floss is undisturbed by Jamie Oliver's evil finger of good health and, unlike the capitalist pigs of the mainstream theme parks, you won't be kicked off a roller-coaster for asking "can we stay on for another please guv'nor?"

Great Grandpa Osborne used to work on a funfair actually, until the day when he drank three bottles of "Off Your Paps" brand economy whisky and drove a dodgem from Solihull to Swansea. He would have kept his job as well if he hadn't ignored the "this way only" signs on a roundabout just off the A465.

May Day Funfair, Midsummer Common, Cambridge will be running all weekend.
