Errol
John's Moon on a Rainbow Shawl is being brought to Bristol
by Eclipse Theatre, a company formed in 2000 to develop the
profile of black theatre in the regions.
It won the Observer new play competition in 1957 and has since
had various incarnations.
Set in a backyard of a tenement in Trinidad, in the early
1950s, the play follows the lives of extraordinary individuals,
struggling to survive amidst poverty and oppression.
Love, ambition, violence and sexual morality are left out
in the sun as the dreams of leaving Trinidad and setting up
a new life in England become overpowering.
Ephraim dreams of a fresh life in Liverpool, but Rosa has
a reason for him to stay.
Charlie means well, but it is Sophia who works hard to provide
for their daughter's future, while Mavis just works hard to
survive.
A
theft in Old Mac's shop puts them all under suspicion, and
events over the course of a couple of days will change their
lives forever.
The cast
Featuring a cast of 11, the production is directed by acclaimed
director Paulette Randall, who was recently commissioned by
the Tricycle Theatre to direct King Hedley II, a new play
written by the celebrated American writer August Wilson.
The cast includes Ram John Holder, who is perhaps best known
for his role as Pork Pie in the TV series Desmond's, as Old
Mack.
Victor Romero Evans, recently seen in the BBC2 series Baby
Father plays Ephraim.
Moon on a Rainbow Shawl is part of Eclipse Theatre's three
year initiative aimed at developing the national profile of
middle scale black theatre productions and projects.
Moon on a Rainbow Shawl takes place at the New Vic Studio
from 4th - 8th March.
And if you are feeling inspired by the show then how about
writing a piece of prose or poetry on the theme of 'lost dreams'.
The five best will published here on the website in the week
